Question:
I have worked for this very small company for a little over a year. I love my co-workers dearly..they are amazing. However I don't really enjoy the work I do (hence being here on yahoo). A job doing exactly what I want to do is open at another company. I sent my resume. Oh my god though I feel guilt wracked. What should I do. What is better loving your job or loving your co-workers? If I do leave how do I break it to them…..this will be bad. They have spent a lot of money and time training me (well kind of..it's too small to have real training) and I know I'll hurt them.

Answer:
I understand being close to co-workers, but ask yourself a couple questions, such as:

1. As much as I love my co-workers, are they going to pay my bills or buy my groceries?
2. Would one of them hesitate a second to take THEIR dream job if the opportunity came along?

You will not get many opportunities in life to land a job you know you'll really enjoy doing. I understand guilt, you feel as though you're abandoning your co-workers, but if the situations were reversed, I'm sure they would take the job and try to remain close friends with his or her current co-workers.

If they are really your friends, they will understand what youre going through. They will also support you as you make a difficult job transition. Just remember, don't burn bridges. You may need that job back again someday. Let them know how special they are to you and how badly you feel about leaving, but you have to follow your heart.
